God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen

You go through a stretch where Christmas means a little less, when its more about seeing friends over a school break, all of you coming home again, then it is about the wonder that it was when you were little. You enjoy the presents and the family gathering and the eating and drinking but its not the same.

Until you have your own little ones. They gasp when the Christmas tree is lit up for the first time and they wake up each morning giddy with another night. The little guy held up two fingers today. "Two days until Christmas", he said, and you should have seen the excitement in his eyes.

Whether you're a young buck who's heading home from university to see his folks and buddies, a single fellow or lass spending Christmas away from home, maybe with friends, maybe with a girl or a boy, your first of what may be many Christmases together or you've your own family now, youngsters or grown, I want to wish you the best of the season.

Have a Merry Christmas.

It sounds like this is directed at me, but couldn't be further from the truth. I guess it makes a difference when you're the one doing a good portion of the cooking for family dinners. The holiday season gets me giddy with excitment because the family goes all out with the Ukrainian traditional stuff. 17-dozen perogies this Sunday, all from my own hands. Thanks for the recipe Baba. It's always the food that gets me in the holiday spirit. 13 for dinner Christmas Eve, no idea what's in store for Christmas Day.

Have a good one Pat.

And thank you for your time.

Merry Christmas to you too. As my uncle used to say, you're a gentleman and a scholar and there are damn few of us left.

Enjoy Christmas on the Island Pat, and keep up the good writing.

As I said on Lowetide's blog, I have one Christmas wish for Oiler fans: Kovalchuk and Havelid for Penner, Grebeshkov, Nilsson and Staios, followed by John Madden for Ethan Moreau.

A Public Service Announcment

I just finished wrapping a bunch of gifts
On the stereo I had
Vince Guaraldi's A Charlie Brown Christmas

I tell ya, for an old guy like me, that album takes you back.
That show was first aired December 1965
Basically its been around as long as I can remember.
Sometimes nostalgia is what it used to be.

Plus its great music
